Quince family papers, 1795-1812.

Collection contains correspondence, a fragment of a visitors' book, an inventory, a copy of Susannah Quince's will, fragments of a journal, and a treatise. Correspondence includes a letter (n.d.) from Susannah Quince to her son William which contains excerpts from a work by the Marquise de Lambert about character, wisdom, and conduct. A letter (1795) from J.W. McAlister to Abraham Motte in Charleston (S.C.) concerns a marriage settlement for Mary Sarah Washington Quince. Visitors' book fragment (1802-1804) contains the names of persons whom Susannah Quince visited and received. One page of the book contains an essay on the harmful influence of plays and romances. Inventory (1795) lists the property of Susannah Quince, "Miss Mary," and "William Q," and includes lots in Wilmington (N.C.) and slaves. A fragment of Susannah Quince's journal (1811-1812) concerns her family and social life at Rose Hill in Wilmington (N.C). Handwritten treatise (n.d.) is a commentary on scriptures from the Old Testament.

Daughter of James Hasell, Jr. (1727-1769) and Sarah Wright (1736-1754). Susannah Hasell married Parker Quince (b. 1743) in 1767. Their children were Richard Quince (1769-1809), who married Elizabeth Moore (1773-1835); Mary Sarah Washington Quince (1776-1819), who married Abraham Motte (1764-1833) in 1795; and William Soranzo Quince (1780-1844), who changed his last name to Hasell.
